Congratulations, Westdale Middle School. The school`s World Language Immersion Magnet program was recognized as the Top Merit Magnet Program of Excellence, and Westdale teacher Cristina Manzanares Mariscal was selected as the National Magnet Teacher of the Year.
The honors by the Magnet Schools of America, the national association for magnet and theme-based schools, came during the National Conference on Magnet Schools held April 16-19 in New York. In addition, Westdale`s Mandarin immersion students made history as the first students to present at the conference.
With a magnet component of world language immersion, Westdale students are able to study all academic classes in one of three languages: French, Mandarin or Spanish.

The ribbon-cutting for the amazing aquaponics lab kicked off STEM Night on Wednesday at the Eva Legard Center for Coastal and Environmental Studies. Aquaponics is the merger of growing plants without soil (hydroponics) and growing fish (aquaculture). STEM Night is about using innovative technologies to address real-world problems. It allowed students and their parents to explore science, technology, engineering and math in an interactive and engaging environment. Activities also included "fishing" at Lake Eva, water testing, hydroponic planting, a garden walk, pesto taste testing and making "elephant toothpaste." #WeAreEBR #ebrschools

Pride was on full display Tuesday during a milestone occasion at Northeast High School. For the time in recent memory, the school celebrated two players singing scholarships to play college basketball. Brian Duncan signed to play at Southern University in New Orleans, while J`Maurian "J.R." Belin had already signed with St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron, Michigan. Northeast fourth-year Principal Showanna Ross said she`s proud of students and it`s only the beginning. "Every day I come to work, my goal is to see my students win," Ross said. "I wanted the whole school to see what success looks like. ...We`re here in Pride, with pride in our students and the possibilities that Northeast has to offer." Brian, a senior 6-foot guard and three-year starter, led the Vikings to a 20-10 record this season and their first home playoff in 17 years. As a junior, he set the Northeast single-game record with 51 points. J`Maurian, a 6-2 guard who played this season at a prep school, played for the Vikings from 2018-2023. Congratulations to both players for a notable event for the school.

Our future is bright and filled with new images and cutting-edge technologies," said Principal Tara Mitchell. Under the guidance of facilitator Sheila Bryant, the lab allows students to research topics and engage in hands-on activities.
