Matherne's Market Open House
Matherne's Market at 440 on Third, a full-service market located in the heart of downtown, is hosting an OPEN HOUSE for a peek inside this historic milestone! This Wednesday, January 21st from 6PM-8PM the Matherne's family will open their doors for downtown supporters to experience and taste Matherne's unique food offerings! There will be a short presentation at 7PM to highlight the historical significance of this downtown supermarket opening in what has been a food desert for over 50 years.

Restaurant Week Baton Rouge
This week long event will feature some of the city's best restaurants who come together to offer special meals at big discounts and provide much-need cash to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Restaurants will offer 3-course meals which generally include an appetizer, entree and dessert at fixed prices from $15-$35 per person. The offers will reflect a substantial discount from regular menu pricing in hopes of enticing new customers and showing appreciation to existing ones. Please support all of the participating downtown restaurants!

Producer's Talk: Dark Universe
Dr. Carter Emmart, Producer of Dark Universe and director of Astrovisualization at the American Museum of Natural History's Rose Center for Earth and Space, will present a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the most accurate three-dimensional mapping data of the universe was used to create the show's beautiful visual effects. Following the talk, enjoy a screening of Dark Universe as well as a question and answer session with Dr. Emmart. Regular admission rates apply.

8th Annual Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence
The Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence honors Louisiana's revered storyteller, Ernest J. Gaines, and serves to inspire and recognize rising African-American fiction writers of excellence at a national level. The book award, initiated by donors of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, is now in its eighth year and has become nationally recognized in its role of enhancing visibility of emerging black fiction writers while also expanding the audience for this literature. The annual award of a $10,000 cash prize is to support the writer and help enable her/him to focus on her/his art of writing.

BRSO Masterworks IV
Stephen Paulus' "Age of American Passions" was written on a commission from the BRSO to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 1999. Now in its 66th season, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra will bring this work back to the River Center where it received its premiere.

Winter Veggies at the Market
Find an assortment of winter vegetables from local farmers at the Market this Saturday including citrus, strawberries, greens, root vegetables and cabbage. Locally sourced pork, beef and seafood can also be found along with milk, cheese and honey. The Fresh from the Market cooking demonstration will feature Lisa Buquoi of Supper Solutions with samples of her recipes which are available as frozen meals to-go each Saturday inside Main Street Market.
