Downtown is home to two historic neighborhoods, Spanish Town & Beauregard Town. Most homes in these neighborhoods are pre WWII era and have tons of character and charm. Sometimes "character" may mean a few beauty marks and signs of ageing on the structures. In response to the neighborhoods' desire to increase curb appeal and enhance their facades, the Downtown Development District instituted the Downtown Residential Façade Improvement Grant Program to assist property owners in the restoration and preservation of their residential properties. This program ultimately supports the preservation of Downtown's character and neighborhoods!
The Downtown Residential Façade Improvement Grant Program provides both financial and intellectual support and homeowners are encouraged, wherever possible, to restore the original character of the structure. So far, three rounds of individual grants of up to $500 have been awarded to 18 residential projects in Beauregard Town and Spanish Town. Each grant awarded requires a 50% match and does not have to be paid back to the Downtown Development District as long as the property owner meets the general requirements of the program. Recipients of the grant are raving about the work they have completed on their homes and the grant assistance they received!
"Doing the work of historic preservation is very expensive, and it is nice to know that there is another way to minimize expenses. If and when we do another project, rest assured that we will contact the DDD to see if the grants are still available." - Spanish Town Property Owners Lance Bennett and Ben Babin.
"The grant program provided an incentive for me to tackle the deferred maintenance on the front façade of my house. Now, my home is on par with the other beautiful properties in Beauregard Town." - Beauregard Town Property Owner Brian Goad
"The DDD's residential façade grant program has really spurred us to tackle curb appeal projects we've needed to do but kept putting off. Having a freshly painted house has made all the difference in how our house looks. We've even had people passing through ask if they could take pictures. A couple visiting from overseas said it seemed like the quintessential American cottage. The DDD made their investment into downtown an easy process from this resident's perspective." - Beauregard Town Property Owner Kelly Connolly
