A MESSAGE FROM THE DDD
Downtown Greenway
Construction to begin!

The North Boulevard Promenade section of the Downtown Greenway is set to begin construction following a groundbreaking ceremony that took place today at 10:00AM on North Boulevard.

Mayor Melvin 'Kip' Holden, Councilwoman Tara Wicker, & Davis Rhorer, DDD Executive Director all reflected on the vision & partnerships it takes to see an interconnected Greenway come to life. Mike Airhart of the Capital Area Finance Authority highlighted their organization's funding commitment to and excitement in seeing the project implemented. Mark Martin, a representative of Bike Baton Rouge also spoke about the impact of the Downtown Greenway and its connections to the community and the Mississippi River Levee Trail.

The Downtown Greenway is a 2.75 mile interconnected network of bike/pedestrian pathways connecting Baton Rouge's public parks and recreational facilities, inner city communities, and cultural attractions through the use of greenways, or linear parks.

The multi-phased, alternative transportation project will utilize the existing BREC parks, Interstate infrastructure, and public right-of-ways. It creates the link to over 7 local parks - Memorial Stadium, Expressway Park, Brooks Park and City Park, Convention Park, Arsenal Park, and Seventh Street Senior Citizens Park - strengthening the social cohesion, promoting community revitalization and adding economic value to Baton Rouge communities.

The Downtown Development District is the lead agency responsible for administering the Downtown Greenway project, in partnership with the East Baton Rouge City-Parish. BREC and the EBR Redevelopment Authority have also been partners in portions of the Greenway. Funding for the Greenway has been provided by local, state, and federal funding sources. Construction on the North Boulevard section is expected to be complete by the end of 2016.
