Downtown continues to welcome new developments, bringing more people and activity to the heart of the city. This added growth emphasizes the need to keep our streets clean and safe for workers, residents, and visitors to enjoy. Several maintenance related activities have been initiated and will continue into 2019.
DDD MAINTENANCE REPORT The DDD has created a maintenance report that includes all the initiatives of the Downtown Maintenance Committee. Many ongoing efforts including the 'We Live It' community beautifcation campaigns and documenting/reporting issues to the City-Parish will continue in 2019. In addition, the DDD is exploring other programs and initiatives that prioritize maintaining our public spaces. Check out the link below for the full report.
'WE LIVE IT' CAMPAIGN The second annual 'We Live It' Downtown Distinction award campaign has begun in the month of November, recognizing downtown businesses for their outstanding efforts to beautify and maintain their exteriors. Downtown Healthcare and Wellness was recognized this month in the Retail/Service award category and is located at 307 Third Street. The property is owned and managed by Ben B. Taylor III. Stay tuned for next month's winner in the Hospitality category.
WASTE ORDINANCE In October, the East Baton Rouge Metropolitan Council approved the waste ordinance developed by the Downtown Maintenance Committee. The ordinance limits the amount of time waste receptacles are allowed to remain on the public right-of-way or sidewalks. A link to the new ordinance can be found below.
UTILITY PAINT Downtown has seen a lot of construction recently, and with this work, utility paint markings are unfortunately a necessary component. Several utility companies have committed to utilizing water-based paint to minimize the long-term impact on our streets and sidewalks. The success of this initiative will be evaluated in June 2019 to determine whether or not an established ordinance requiring the use of water-based paint is necessary to pursue.
GREEN ARMY CLEAN-UP Next Tuesday, November 20th, the Green Army volunteers will help clean up downtown from 4-5pm. Those interested in volunteering for the event should meet at North Boulevard Town Square at 3:45pm. The first 200 volunteers will receive a 'Green Army' T-Shirt! Please join us!
