DDD Recognized for Recent Achievements

The Downtown Development District of Baton Rouge has recently been recognized for numerous accomplishments on the State and International levels. As development in Downtown increases and new projects come to fruition, the DDD continues to take an active role in maintaining and developing relationships across jurisdictional lines and economic sectors.

The goal of the City of Baton Rouge and the DDD in cultivating these relationships has a direct effect on the positive and progressive opportunity for development.

"The Downtown Development District's steadfastness and commitment to high standards continue to keep the City of Baton Rouge on the local, regional, national and global forefronts," stated Van Mayhall, Jr., Chairman of the Downtown Development District.

DDD paper selected for 2010 World Congress presentation

Downtown Baton Rouge will be featured this summer at the World Congress of Downtowns and Town Centres. The Congress meets once every three years and is a joint assembly of the International Downtown Association and the Association of Town Centre Management.

In July 17, 2009 the DDD submitted an abstract in a call for papers titled: A Tale of Two Cities: How Successful Partnerships Enabled Downtown Baton Rouge to Thrive in the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The paper was chosen from a pool of hundreds of submittals worldwide as a candidate for presentation. An academic paper will be submitted for publication as well as a full graphic presentation for the assembly.

In the immediate aftermath of the storm, Louisiana's Capitol City experienced nearly 10-years of growth overnight. With hotels filled to capacity and traffic counts that exceeded 30-year projections, the dramatic influx of people presented unprecedented challenges and opportunities for the Downtown Development District.

The DDD quickly identified problems and resolutions and took steps to accommodate the need for job stability and to ensure that Downtown Baton Rouge would not only survive-but ultimately thrive-in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

The creative and innovative partnerships exercised in responding to Hurricane Katrina makes for a case study for best practices in how downtown organizations can respond to and prepare for catastrophic events around the world.

The DDD will travel to London, England for the conference June 16-19, 2010 to present and participate in workshops with other downtown organizations from around the globe.

This opportunity once again presents us the forum to showcase development strategies and progressive tactics and we are honored to once again represent Downtown Baton Rouge on the world stage.

Davis Rhorer and NBTS designers receive ASLA awards

On Saturday, February 27th, 2010 DDD Executive Director Davis Rhorer was presented the Patron of Landscape Architecture Award by The Louisiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects at their Annual Awards Banquet in New Orleans. Mr. Rhorer was honored for his role as DDD Executive Director, a non-traditional one for a landscape architect, but one in which he has been successful by applying the principles of landscape architecture.

The award was the Dr. Robert S. Reich Service to the Profession Award, an award named after the founder of the Landscape Architecture program at Louisiana State University. Rhorer received his degree in Landscape Architecture from this program and was instructed by Dr. Reich. His career is a testament to the growing possibilities of career paths for a Landscape Architect.

On the same night, North Boulevard Town Square designers Brown Danos Land Design and Joseph Furr Design Studio received the Louisiana Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects Merit Award for a Recreational Master Plan for North Boulevard Town Square.

North Boulevard Town Square is the first phase of implementation of the Baton Rouge Riverfront Master Plan. The landscape architects built on the objectives set forth by the plan and created a walkable, pedestrian safe, multi-use public space over an existing underutilized median while maintaining efficient circulation, integrating sustainability and smart growth principles, and activating the southern end of the Arts & Entertainment District in downtown Baton Rouge. The City of Baton Rouge/DDD are the clients for North Boulevard Town Square.

DDD/City receives grant from Keep Louisiana Beautiful

We are happy to announce that the Downtown Development District/City of Baton Rouge was selected for a $10,000 Community Grant award from Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Inc.

The DDD is again partnering with the City of Baton Rouge to continue the mission of Operation Downtown Clean Sweep in the spirit of the City's anti-litter campaign. This initiative has been in place since 2000 and is responsible for a number of partnerships to place trash receptacles throughout the Downtown area.

There are a number of public and private sector projects underway within downtown Baton Rouge. With this development the activity of downtown is soaring as more cultural attractions, restaurants and entertainment venues open.

As this growth occurs, the City of Baton Rouge recognizes that it must be proactive in providing the amenities needed, such as trash receptacles, to maintain a clean downtown both now and for the future.

The grant requires a local match and funds are currently being identified for this project. This is the third time that the DDD has received funds from this grant program and we are most appreciative to Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Inc.
