Mayor Holden, Glen "Big Baby" Davis to promote healthy habits at Farmers Market this Saturday

Mayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden and former LSU basketball standout Glen "Big Baby" Davis will visit the Downtown Red Stick Farmers Market Saturday morning to promote the Mayor's Healthy BR Initiative, which encourages healthy eating habits, including buying fresh and local.

Davis, who has played the past four years in the NBA with the Boston Celtics, has also worked to focus public awareness on the growing problem of childhood obesity. Mayor Holden and Davis are scheduled to arrive at 9AM at the Red Stick Farmers Market.

They will make their way to North Street seating area inside the Main Market, where they will address market patrons about the advantages of healthy eating. Chef Celeste Gill will be on hand to whip up some healthy cooking demonstration and provide samples of healthful snacks.

At 10AM, the Mayor and Davis will announce the winners of the Red Stick Farmers Market canning contest. From 8AM until 12PM Saturday, the Mayor's Healthy City Initiative partners will offer free health screenings at the Red Stick Farmer's Market. Screenings will include blood pressure, body mass index, and body fat percentage.

For more information, contact Copper Alvarez, executive director of the Big River Economic & Agricultural Development Alliance (BREADA), at (225) 267-5060. Saturday will also be the first day that the LSU Tiger Trails Transit will begin providing free transit to the Red Stick Farmer's Market. Shuttles will run from 8AM to 12PM from various points on the LSU Campus to the market at 5th Street and Main Street.

The Red Stick Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 8AM-12PM at Fifth and Main Streets.
