The Nutcracker: A Tale from the Bayou
World-class guest artists and newly-married couple Hiroko Sakakibara-Sliva and Simon Sliva will return to the River Center Theatre stage this December with award-winning pre-professional corps and soloists, area celebrities and over 300 local children to present the annual production of "The Nutcracker: A Tale from the Bayou."

Skating on the River
Skating on the River is back! Single ticket includes skate rental, 90 minute skating session, small drink and small candy, $12. The Discover Downtown package includes skating session at the River Center, admission to the USS Kidd Veteran's Museum and LASM for only $18.

Opéra Louisiane Presents Amahl and the Night Visitors
Join Opera Louisiane for Amahl and the Night Visitors at the Old State Capitol. Starring internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano Gwendolyn Jones as the Mother and Cole Roland as Amahl, this 45 minute opera, sung in English, is sure to warm hearts. Opéra Louisiane is joined by the Greater Baton Rouge Children's Chorus, the Dance Center & School of Performing Arts, and Kids' Orchestra. Amahl and the Night Visitors will be followed by a Holiday Concert and Sing-Along, featuring their newly formed Community Chorus.

Last Saturday at the Market for December
Enjoy fresh food, local art, music and more this Saturday downtown at the Markets. It is the place to be for unique, locally made holiday gifts this season. Red Stick Farmers and Main Street Market vendors will offer a great selection of artisan food and handmade gift items as well as plants and greenery to decorate for the holidays. Enjoy music by The John Gray Jazz Trio and the East Baton Rouge Parish Talented Musicians throughout the morning. The Fresh from the Market cooking demonstration will feature Pat Higgins of The Chimes Restaurant & Bar on Highland Road. Stop inside the North Street entrance to Main Street Market at 10AM to watch the demo and sample the completed dish. The Red Stick Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from 8AM-12PM at Fifth and Main Streets.

Arts Market for the Holidays
The Baton Rouge Arts Market normally takes place every first Saturday of the month from 8:00AM until 12:00 noon at 5th and Main Streets in Downtown Baton Rouge. The Arts Market is running throughout the month of December and there is only one chance left. Shop for Christmas with over 60 artists from Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Florida who will present original works of art in a variety of mediums including, pottery, jewelry, woodwork, textiles, photographs, glass, paintings, sculpture, hand-made soaps and so much more. The Arts Market regularly features free children's art activities from 9:00AM until 12:00 noon at the Arts Market's Kids Booth. The Baton Rouge Arts Market is held in conjunction with the weekly Red Stick Farmers Market and the Main Street Market.

Eric J. Brown: Text & Context
An exhibition of the works of artist Eric J. Brown titled "Text & Context" is on display at the Shaw Center for the Arts and runs through January 23. Through brilliant abstract paintings, scrolls in vessels and two-dimensional sculptures, Brown explores a language by which all in existence relate. On Saturday Brown will give a guided tour of the exhibition answering questions associated with the process, inspiration and execution of this body of work. This family-friendly exhibition is free and open to the public during the Shaw Center's business hours of 9AM - 11PM.

Christmas in the Atrium
More than 100,000 Christmas lights decorate the Atrium while Santa's Elves help children create Christmas cards for our troops. Holiday videos and music play continuously on the dazzling Christmas stage. Visitors can join Mrs. Claus in her "Cookie Kitchen" for free cookies and lemonade and also take free photos with Santa on his throne as he hears Christmas wishes (bring your camera). There will be a laser and light spectacular choreographed to the music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Price of admission for the Santa's Workshop is; adult $10, children $5, (2 and under free), Santa's Workshop & Laser Show for adults $15, children $8 (2 and under free)

Red Stick Green Drinks is a chance for ecologically minded Baton Rouge residents to meet, exchange ideas, and just generally have a good time. Suzannah DesRoches from Baton Rouge Green will talk about how the organization inspires residents of the Greater Baton Rouge Area to conserve, plant and sustain our community's trees.

USS KIDD Christmas Movie Classics
Visit the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial this holiday season. Classic Christmas movies will be shown in the Museum theater for free with paid admission to the museum. Also, watch Baton Rouge's USS KIDD and Red Jacket Firearms light up the riverfront on national television. Tonight's episode of Discovery Channel's "Sons of Guns" will feature the USS KIDD and Baton Rouge's annual July 4th air show.
