Groundbreaking Ceremony held for River Park Underpass
Tuesday, The Honorable Mayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden, Van Mayhall, Jr., Chairman of the DDD Commission, and Davis Rhorer, Executive Director of the DDD, participated in a groundbreaking ceremony for a four-lane underpass through the levee for the River Park Development. Plans call for a mixed-use development that would include hotels, residential apartments and condos, neighborhood retail and a destination restaurant and entertainment complex. The site is unusual in downtown Baton Rouge because it is located on a high bank of the Mississippi River with no levee to obstruct river views. "There are a variety of barriers that impede pedestrian access to the riverfront, depriving them of incredible views of the Mississippi River. Today, we are breaking through those barriers," commented Van Mayhall, Jr., Chairman of the Downtown Development District Commission.
