Celebrating our Freedom on the 4th of July!

As our Nation's Independence Day nears, we must not forget the importance of freedom and the sacrifices made to secure our country's greatest asset. Independence Day is a day of remembrance and celebration for that which makes our country truly special - Freedom. The freedoms bestowed upon us are exercised everyday through public assembly, media, and individual expression. We would like to recognize some of the local groups that represent these freedoms and enhance the quality of our everyday life.

The traditional grand finale of the night is a massive fireworks display over the majestic Mississippi River. It is the largest fireworks display in Louisiana and is presented by WBRZ-TV Channel 2, and The Advocate, and sponsored by our local Lincoln Mercury Dealers. This generous, yearly contribution has played a tremendous role in the continuing success of the Star Spangled Celebration event and other events throughout the evening. The Downtown Development District would like to publicly express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the presenters and sponsors for all of their help and support.

Serving as the largest fundraiser of the year for the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial, the annual USS KIDD Star Spangled Celebration usually draws between fifty to one hundred thousand people to the riverfront each Fourth of July. Through the years, it has become a city tradition that helps strengthen the economy and sense of community of Downtown Baton Rouge. Event attendance, as well as individual donations, are imperative to the vitality of the USS KIDD Veterans Memorial and we encourage you to remember them during this special time. Please visit their website at
http://www.usskidd.com/ for a list of activities for the day and to support the USS Kidd Veterans Memorial in its efforts.

In addition, four non-profit organizations: the Manship Theatre (http://www.manshiptheatre.org), BREADA (Red Stick Farmer's Market / Main Street Market
http://www.breada.org), The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge (Arts Market http://www.artsbr.org), and LSU Museum of Art (http://www.lsumoa.com), are all hosting events on the 4th of July. They all greatly contribute to the quality of life in Downtown Baton Rouge as well as to the entire region. If you would like to help in their efforts, please visit their websites and attend their activities on the 4th.

The City of Baton Rouge/Parish of East Baton Rouge provides the services to allow this large public assembly for the 4th and we are we are grateful to the Mayor, Metropolitan Council and City Parish Departments (Police, Fire, EMS, DPW, etc.) for their tireless work.

We look forward to seeing you during the day-long festivities on the 4th of July and thank you for your continued support of Downtown Baton Rouge.
